Networking Advice

  • Put yourself out there are talk to people you don't know
  • Be strategic about which conferences you attend
  • smaller conferences can allow more personal and repetitive interactions
  • Conversations don't need to start with your science or work at all. Find anything to connect on
  • Have an online or place to point people who want to connect with you

NEGOTIATING SALARY AND WORK CONTRACTS 

Advice from Shannon Barber-Meyer during 2020 Panel 
  1. Salary: you can always ask for more than what they offer or advertise.  Worse case they say no.  
  2. Ask for moving expenses to be covered if you have to relocate
  3. Inquire into Signing Bonuses
  4. Discuss teleworking or work schedule flexibility  
  5. Vacation time, question how much you can get, will it increase over time (lump periods or split?) ​

Field Advice

  • Plan, plan, plan. Consider your funding, permissions, and travel plans. Anything can change at the last minute!
  • Prioritize your health. Prepare any mediations or vitamins you may need
  • Work with a supportive community
  • Develop cultural awareness. Learn to work with diversity of thoughts, opinions and beliefs
  • Be resourceful and use local resources. This may help support local communities and build project capacity.
  • Consider the stakeholders for your project and how they may be involved
  • Ask for help and guides to familiarize yourself with local environment and culture
